While short term stress can be beneficial, helping to focus the body and mind, long term stress is detrimental and can contribute to increased vulnerability to disease.Women of Colour are particularly susceptible due to being repeatedly pushed into a fight-or-flight state by prejudice, marginalisation, institutional bias and the relentlessness of life in a Western economy. Correspondingly, research shows that black women reach menopause earlier and have worse symptoms such as hot flashes, depression and sleep disturbances, and are less likely to receive hormone therapy or medical and mental health services than white women.The expectation for black women to be caretakers for families, a team player at work, nurturing everyone but themselves, comes at a very high price to our health and wellbeing. The menopause transition is the perfect time to start reclaiming your time and prioritising your health. After all, you cannot pour from an empty cup.
